Enhanced Biosecurity for Dairies
Enhanced biosecurity takes extra effort over daily actions to protect cattle from FMD and similar contagious diseases.
Prepare! Learn what is needed, then gather the team of people and materials.
Write! Enhance your daily biosecurity plan or create one using the checklists, templates, and manuals below.
Inform Others! Share your biosecurity rules using forms, SOPs, and signs

Prepare for Enhanced Biosecurity!
Register for the free National Dairy FARM Biosecurity online training to learn how to write an Enhanced Biosecurity Plan. Who should ensure a plan is written? The Biosecurity Manager. Next, build a team with the herd veterinarian, FARM Evaluators, cooperative/processors, haulers/transporters, and other advisors that can help lower the risk for disease exposure. Then use the materials and database linked below to write a plan specific to your operation. Biosecurity Managers should train people on biosecurity steps for their job duties.
Biosecurity Manager…

Write an Enhanced Biosecurity Plan!
The SMS Plan movement permit criteria suggests having the biosecurity measures in the checklist in place and acceptable to officials.
If you already have a written daily biosecurity plan, compare it to the Enhanced Biosecurity Checklist below. Add any missing items to your plan.
No plan? Use one of the templates or the FARM Database: Enhanced Biosecurity, and look at examples below. Some states will review Enhanced Biosecurity Plans before an outbreak.

Biosecurity Forms, SOPs and Signs
People crossing the LOS need to follow the biosecurity entry steps, signs, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for tasks. Practicing enhanced biosecurity and training others before an outbreak helps people learn how to keep disease out of the herd.

Forms and SOPs
Movement Record forms can be found on the Traceability page.

Signs and Posters
These 8.5″ by 11″ signs and 11″ x 17″ posters can be downloaded, printed, and hung up to show your biosecurity expectations.
H5N1 Biosecurity Resources

The USDA, NMPF, and AABP have resources focused on preventing the spread of H5N1 virus on equipment, people’s clothing, footwear, and other items that move farm-to-farm.

Daily Biosecurity

The resources below help producers build daily biosecurity habits. That can lead to stronger, or enhanced, biosecurity which will be needed to protect cattle from FMD and similar contagious diseases. The National Dairy FARM Program Biosecurity Task Force created this info, making sure it aligns with the SMS enhanced biosecurity items.
